These are not normal times.
When academic freedom is under unprecedented threats and challenges at UNC and colleges around the country, it is more important than ever to stand for the values of a liberal arts education that we hold dear. That's why, if elected, I will put forward a proposal to institute the American Civil Liberty Union's Firewall for Freedom Resolution. On day one.
This resolution, if enacted, would be a declaration of support for every Tar Heel unfairly targeted by federal and campus authorities because of their citizenship, their beliefs, or any other fundamental part of themselves that contributes to UNC's wonderful community. It is a statement that shows we will not back down, full stop.
There's an old American saying: "live and let live." That means that anyone, regardless of their background, has the right to live their life freely. To speak their mind and pursue their passion without fear of retribution. It's high time that we fought for that liberty; this resolution is a powerful first step.
